BND-016Worth a life

Is Haute Route, Chamonix–Zermatt worth it?

Only if you are properly fit and prepared — the Haute Route is a genuine mountaineering objective, not a walk with a view. Roped glacier travel, altitude and long days demand a guide and real conditioning. For the ready, it is among the great lines in the Alps. For the underprepared, it is dangerous and miserable.

€€€ · March–April (ski); July–September (walk) · 6–8 days

Worth it if

  • You are strongly fit with alpine or ski experience
  • You want a serious, roped high-mountain traverse
  • You will train and hire a qualified guide

Skip it if

  • You have never used crampons or a rope
  • Crevasses and altitude frighten rather than thrill you
  • You want scenery without suffering for it

The catch

People underestimate this line badly, lured by the famous names at each end. It is graded far above a trekking route, weather can pin you in a hut for days, and a competent guide is non-negotiable, not optional.

If it’s not for you, consider
