BND-023Worth a trip
Is A night in the Icehotel, Jukkasjärvi worth it?
Rarely as a night's sleep — but yes as a one-off spectacle. The Icehotel is genuine artistry, rebuilt from river ice each winter and gone by summer, and worth seeing. Actually sleeping in a sub-zero suite is more endurance than rest, so book one cold night for the story and a warm room for the others.
€€€ · December–April · 1–2 nights
Worth it if
- You want a unique, of-the-moment piece of design
- You collect distinctive one-night experiences
- You will pair it with other Arctic activities
Skip it if
- You expect a comfortable night's sleep
- You dislike cold or cannot travel far north
- You want substance beyond a single striking image
The catch
The night itself is the catch: you sleep in a bag at around minus five, and most guests find it a novelty endured rather than enjoyed. Many book one ice night plus a warm room, and treat the visit as art, not accommodation.
