BND-018Worth a life

Is Kilimanjaro worth it?

For most who reach the top, yes — Kilimanjaro is the rare great summit an ordinary, determined person can actually stand on. No climbing skill is needed, only fitness and a body that tolerates altitude. But roughly a third turn back short of the crater, so it is a real test, not a guaranteed trophy.

€€€ · January–March, June–October · 6–9 days on the mountain

Worth it if

  • You are fit and want a genuine high summit
  • You accept altitude may still defeat you
  • You will choose a longer, slower acclimatisation route

Skip it if

  • You want a scenic trek with a sure ending
  • You have known problems at altitude
  • You dislike large guided groups and porter logistics

The catch

Altitude, not fitness, decides most summits, and cheap operators pushing five-day climbs raise your odds of failing and your health risk both. Pay for the extra days on the mountain — acclimatisation is the whole game.
