Worth a trip

The verdict — why this Mark

A tandem skydive needs no skill and takes an afternoon, yet the freefall rewires something for everyone who tries it. It is brief and packaged, which caps the Mark, but the transformation-per-minute is unmatched. A vivid worth-a-trip everyone should taste once.

The story

There is a long, banal wait first: paperwork, a harness fitting, a briefing you will not fully remember, and time to think that you would rather not have. Then the aircraft, small and loud, spirals up for fifteen minutes to altitude while the fields below shrink to a patchwork of green and the horizon begins, faintly, to curve. Strapped tight to an instructor you have known for half an hour, you shuffle toward the open door. This is the worst moment. Nothing in the body agrees with what is about to happen. Then you are out, and the fear you expected does not arrive in the shape you expected. Freefall at around two hundred kilometres an hour is not falling in any familiar sense; there is no floor rushing up, no stomach-drop of a lift, but a solid wall of wind, a roar, and a strange, buffeting stability as the air holds you flat against it. For perhaps fifty seconds the world is enormous and you are entirely inside the present tense, unable to hold a single thought that is not this. The canopy opens with a firm tug and the roar stops dead. Now it is silent, and slow, and you hang in the harness while the instructor spirals gently down and the landscape resolves back into roads, cars and the drop zone's orange windsock. Five or six minutes of stillness after the loudest minute of your year, the adrenaline draining into something close to elation. It needs no skill and takes an afternoon, which is exactly why it earns its place: the ratio of transformation to effort is unmatched anywhere on the list. Choose a centre affiliated with the national parachuting body, go on a clear and calm day, and eat something light beforehand rather than nothing at all. Almost everyone lands changed by a small degree, and grinning in a way that takes a while to wear off.

The route — how to book

What you need

  • Fitted athletic layers

Close-fitting, flexible clothing that will not flap in freefall; nothing loose around the neck or waist.

  • Lace-up trainers

Secure, flat shoes that stay on your feet at exit and cushion the landing; no sandals or slip-ons.

  • Thin gloves

It is cold at altitude and colder still in the wind; thin gloves keep hands usable without bulk.

  • Warm base layer

The temperature drops sharply with height; a light thermal top under your clothes takes the edge off.

  • Lip balm

A small thing, but the dry, fast air of freefall is punishing on lips and skin.

Preparation

Body

Physical demand sits at 1/5. Arrive with the fitness this asks for; it repays it.

Mind

The hardest part is rarely the logistics. Expect to be changed, and let it.

Recovery

Recovery is the condition of the adventurous life, not its reward.

Frequently asked

Do I need any experience or training?+

None. On a tandem jump the instructor controls everything, from exit to canopy to landing; your briefing takes minutes. It is the reason a first-timer can freefall safely.

How safe is a tandem skydive?+

Tandem skydiving is one of the more tightly regulated adventure activities, with reserve parachutes, automatic openers and rigorous instructor standards. Choosing a centre affiliated with the national body is the single most important safeguard.

What can stop me jumping on the day?+

Weather, mainly: low cloud, high wind or rain will ground flights, sometimes for the whole day. There are also weight limits and some medical restrictions, so declare conditions and check the operator's rules in advance.

Is there a minimum age or weight?+

Most centres require jumpers to be 18 or over and set an upper weight limit, commonly around 100kg, for harness and canopy reasons. Confirm the exact figures with your chosen operator.

How should I prepare on the day?+

Eat a light meal beforehand rather than skipping food, wear comfortable clothes and trainers, and arrive early expecting to wait. Nerves are normal and pass the moment you leave the aircraft.
