The verdict — why this Mark

A Wim Hof week combines breathing, cold exposure and mindset into a demanding, well-structured programme in the Polish mountains. The physical and mental shift is real and repeatable at home. A strong year’s-highlight that leaves you with a method, not just a memory.

The story

The week takes place in the mountains of southern Poland — most often around Przesieka in the Karkonosze, the range Wim Hof has used for his winter expeditions for years. You arrive to snow, a wooden lodge and a schedule built on three pillars the method never stops repeating: the breathing, the cold and the mindset that binds them. The breathwork comes first, each morning and often before each exposure — rounds of deep, cyclical breaths followed by a held exhale, done lying down, that leave your hands tingling and your head unusually clear. Then the cold. It begins manageably, a cold shower, and escalates across the days: immersion in ice baths timed by the instructors, and eventually a stream or pool broken open in the snow, entered slowly and left before the shivering wins. The physiological logic is that the breathing primes the body and the mind governs the response, and by mid-week most people can sit in water near freezing for a couple of minutes with something close to calm. The centrepiece is usually a snow hike, and on the clearer courses an ascent of Śnieżnik or a nearby summit, done in shorts and boots. It sounds reckless and is closely supervised; the point is not endurance for its own sake but proof, delivered to your own nervous system, that you can regulate a response you assumed was involuntary. Evenings bring the theory, the science such as it is, and the group settling of a hard day. Be clear about what this is and is not. Cold exposure carries real risk, and the entire method depends on following the instructors' protocols — never breathe and submerge unsupervised, never practise the breathing in or near water alone. It is physically demanding, not a spa, and it is closed to under-eighteens. What separates it from a single ice bath is that you leave with a method rather than a memory. The breathing, the graded cold, the framing — all of it is repeatable in a cold shower at home on a Tuesday morning, and most people who commit to the week keep some version of the practice long after the snow has gone.

The route — how to book

What you need

  • Swim shorts or trunks

You enter the ice baths and snow pools in shorts; a quick-drying pair you do not mind ruining is ideal.

  • Insulated down jacket

Rewarming fast after immersion is essential; a warm, packable jacket goes straight on when you step out.

  • Insulated winter boots

For the snow hikes and the walk to the water; warm, grippy boots keep the feet functional in deep cold.

  • Changing robe and towel

A warm robe lets you dress and recover quickly at the water's edge, which matters more than it sounds.

  • Merino base layers

Worn between exposures and on the hikes, thermal base layers regulate temperature and dry quickly.

Preparation

Body

Physical demand sits at 3/5. Arrive with the fitness this asks for; it repays it.

Mind

The hardest part is rarely the logistics. Expect to be changed, and let it.

Recovery

Recovery is the condition of the adventurous life, not its reward.

Frequently asked

Do I need to be very fit or cold-hardy already?+

You need reasonable general fitness for the snow hikes, but no prior cold training. The programme grades the exposure from a cold shower upward so beginners build tolerance safely across the week.

Is the ice bathing dangerous?+

Cold-water immersion carries real risk, which is why it is done supervised, timed, and only after the breathing preparation. The firm rule is never to combine the breathing with water unsupervised, as it can cause blackout.

Will Wim Hof himself be there?+

Usually not. Most weeks are led by certified Wim Hof Method instructors. A small number of expeditions feature him directly and are priced and booked separately.

Can I keep practising at home afterwards?+

Yes, and that is the point. The breathing and graded cold showers are designed to be continued at home; the week gives you the technique and the confidence to sustain it.

Who should not do this?+

The method is not advised during pregnancy, or for people with epilepsy, serious cardiovascular conditions or a history of blackouts. Consult a doctor first if any apply, and the course is limited to adults.
